The Vietnamese Traditional Tea Ceremony (Lễ Gia Tiên - Ancestral Ceremony) is a vital ritual in a traditional Vietnamese wedding, symbolizing the union of two families and honoring ancestors. To ensure your wedding ceremony, especially the ancestral rites, runs smoothly and meaningfully, here’s a complete checklist of important preparations for this day.

1. Review The Program With The Family Elder Before The Ceremony (Master Of Ceremonies/ Representative)

The master of ceremonies/ representative leads the tea ceremony and ensures all ritual steps follow traditional custom. One day before the ceremony, the bride, groom, and their families should take time to walk through the program together with the representative so that everyone is well-prepared and mistakes can be avoided on the big day.

2. Prepare The Offerings And Guest Refreshments

The ancestral altar (Bàn thờ gia tiên) should be decorated with offerings, fresh flowers, and fruits. Additionally, prepare desserts, cakes, candies for guests. Elegant arrangement and refined flavors signal your family’s care and hospitality.

3. Clean And Prepare The Ceremony Space

A clean, orderly space helps the decoration team set up faster and ensures an aesthetically pleasing wedding space. Finish cleaning 2 days ahead so there’s buffer time to rest and reduce last-minute rush.

4. Confirm Arrival Time With The Wedding Tray Bearer Team

The tray bearer team (Đội bưng quả) are close friends who accompany the couple’s procession. Remind them of the schedule so everyone arrives on time. Punctuality is also a sign of respect for the tradition.

5. Prepare “Lì Xì Trả Duyên” (Lucky Money) For Tray Bearer Team

In Vietnamese wedding tradition, giving red envelopes (lucky money/ lì xì) to the gift-bearing team expresses gratitude and best wishes. This small gesture enriches the wedding ceremony and preserves cultural charm.

6. Go To Bed Early To Look Fresh

The traditional ceremony typically begins early, with makeup and attire preparation starting at dawn. A good night’s rest helps the bride and groom appear radiant and composed.

7. Double-Check Attire And Accessories

From Áo dài - traditional wedding dress, wedding rings, to small accessories (earrings, cufflinks, etc.), everything should be ready the night before. This helps prevent forgetfulness and ensures a calm start in the morning.
